Assignment 9: Reflection (Step 3 of Creating an Annotated Bibliography)

In an article titled Sports Medicine written by M.D. Paul Freudigman and PhD Bradley Wilson, the basic principles of sports medicine are discussed. The article defines sports medicine as a medical field concerned with the rehabilitations and prevention of athletic injuries that are related to the musculoskeletal system. The demand in sports medicine related careers is growing as more people are deciding to get involved with rigorous activity. Because our nation is so interested in sports, there will always be a need for sports medicine related careers in order to treat and prevent injuries. The article discusses the anatomy, diagnosis, treatments and careers involved in sports medicine realm.

Personally, I aspire to become a sport medicine physical therapist in the future. My internship is allowing me to observe a variety of careers whether its under sports medicine, physical therapy or orthotics and prosthetics. This source teaches me the relevance of sports med and what topics I will have to face. This article will be useful in order to discuss what exactly sports medicine means, what careers fall under the title (such as a physical therapist or an orthopedic surgeon) and the education needed to reach each career. The article adds three real world examples to my research of how people are often injured and how sports medicine is beneficial to their recovery process. It also provides useful information on the most common injuries (sprains, strains and fractures) seen due to sports, and how they are treated. Overall, the article gives a great summary of what sports medicine is in all aspects such as treatment processes, career opportunities, necessary education and salaries.
